Mofongo Relleno – Perhaps the Main Dish of Puerto Rico

By: Ivan Gonzalez | October 25, 2020

Mofongo Relleno is perhaps a close contestant to what the main dish of Puerto Rico should be. You will find this dish in almost all reputable restaurants in Puerto Rico with probably the same amount of diversity in ingredients, shapes, and flavors.

At its most basic, Mofongo is made of fried green plantains mashed with garlic, olivine oil, and bacon (chicharrones – deep-fried pork skin). This will give you the flavor of the typical Mofongo.

Stuffing

This is where it gets interesting. You can choose many different toppings, or stuffing, as you probably would like; from chicken, shrimp, lobster, steak, fish, crab, and the list could go on, Mofongo can be combined with so many different meats making such a delicious and fun dish to have.

Presentation

After the plantains have been mashed together, the mass is pretty easy to manipulate to create any desired shape. You could, and will, encounter Mofongo made in the shape of a ball stuffed with meat. Perhaps a half a dome served on top of lettuce with a topping of beef in its sauce. Or inside of a “pilon” with the center full of Camarones (shrimps). So, do not be confuse by their diversity,  they are all Mofongos which started with the basic plantain mass, oil, and garlic.
